The IMAGYN project (acronym of High - resolution IMAGing of the crustal - scale structure of the Central Pyrenees and role of Variscan inheritance on its geodynamic evolution) is a coordinated subproject within the GAPCO project (Gedynamic And Petrogenetic Constraints of the Permo-Carboniferous magmatism of the Catalan Pyrenees), which in turn is the continuation of the SIMPROP project and its subproject GeoPiri3D (CGL2017-84901-C2-2-P), completed in 2021.

The main goal of the IMAGYN project is to characterize, using geophysical methods, the continental lithosphere and its thermodynamic evolution in the Pyrenean axial zone during its integration into the supercontinent of Pangea (Permian-Carboniferous). The results obtained will contribute to improve the knowledge of the Hercynian orogeny in the Pyrenees and will help to better understand the origin of the Permian-Carboniferous magmatism, distributed in different parts of the world.

With the SIMPROP-GeoPiri3D project we obtained a 2. 5D and 3D characterization of the structure of the continental crust of the central Pyrenees -with special interest in the deep geometry of the Maladeta and Andorra-Mont-Lluís Late Carboniferous granites- and the kinematic evolution of the associated Carboniferous-Permian volcaniclastic rocks (Cadí basin) from the integration of geological, petrophysical and geophysical data. Six N-S directed cross-sections were carried out from the gravimetric model, from Vall d'Aran to Cerdanya, in order to determine the geometry of the granitic bodies at depth in order to compare them and understand their genesis. The results have been presented at conferences and various indexed journals [1] [2] [3] [4] [5].

The IMAGYN project aims to deepen some of the aspects that were revealed in the previous project, based on the study with other geophysical techniques. The study area is also enlarged to include the two foreland basins of the Pyrenees, in order to characterize the complete crust. It is expected to obtain a high resolution image of the Central Pyrenees that will help to reconstruct its geodynamic evolution.

Andorra Research + Innovation collaborates with different institutions at an international level, such as the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain of CSIC (IGME-CSIC) which leads the subproject, the Universitat de Barcelona, the Universitat de Zaragoza, the Institut Cartogràfic i Geològic de Catalunya (ICGC) and the Barcelona Geosciences Institute of CSIC. The project is funded by the Programa Estatal de Generación de Conocimiento y Fortalecimiento Científico y Tecnológico del Sistema de I+D+i, Plan Estatal de Investigación Científica y Técnica y de Innovación 2017-2020, (Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación del Govern d'Espanya).
