Andorra Living Lab Challenge

The Andorra Living Lab Challenge is the open innovation programme promoted by Andorra Research & Innovation in collaboration with ENoLL (European Network of Living Labs).

During the months of March and April, start-ups and solutions will be sought that respond to the two challenges defined at a national level, the first relating to mobility and the second in terms of healthy aging.

Both challenges are presented at 4YFN 2025 (4 Years From Now), a global event dedicated to startups and entrepreneurs, held as part of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. It brings together investors, innovators and emerging companies to promote new business opportunities and collaboration. It offers conferences, exhibition spaces and networking meetings. It is a key platform for the future of technology and entrepreneurship. AR+I will be present and we will take the opportunity to look for the first participants.

Challenge 1: Sustainability Digital mobility

Link to apply to the challenge

How can technology be used to create a context focused on active mobility and sustainable local transport?

  • Digital Platforms: Develop apps and management systems to optimize public transport in areas with poor coverage, including groups such as teenagers and the elderly
  • Smart Infrastructure: IoT solutions to monitor and improve the use of greenways and safe paths, and last-mile goods transport
  • Gamification and Incentives: Proposals based on blockchain or AI to reward sustainable journeys (e.g., bonuses for walking)
  • Cultural and Commercial Integration: Digital tools to connect mobility with local commerce and cultural experiences
  • Collaboration and Governance: Decentralized platforms to coordinate public and private actors in the mobility of the future

Territorial and Demographic Context

Andorra is a mountainous country with an area of 468 km² and an approximate population of 85,000 inhabitants, with a large influx of tourists exceeding 8 million visitors annually. This combination generates unique mobility challenges, especially in accessing rural areas, congestion in central valleys, and high dependence on private transport.

Specifics of Mobility in Andorra

  • High Level of Motorization: With more than 1.2 vehicles per inhabitant, Andorra has a strong dependence on private cars. This generates traffic jams, parking problems, and a high environmental impact.
  • Limited Public Transport: Although there are free inter-parish buses and services like the “Bus Express,” coverage does not always meet the needs of residents in more isolated areas.
  • Sustainable Mobility in Development: Greenways and safe paths for pedestrians and cyclists are promoted, but their integration into the transport network is still limited. There are also last-mile distribution companies.
  • Commitment to Sustainability: Andorra is working on the 2030 Agenda and climate neutrality, with initiatives such as the transition to electric mobility and the improvement of public transport.

Challenge 2: Healthy and Digital Aging

Link to apply to the challenge

How can we promote active, healthy, and inclusive aging, improving the social connection and quality of life of older people through their active participation?

  • Digital Health and Prevention: AI and wearables to detect fragility and monitor health plans
  • Promotion of Physical Activity: Gamified apps, digital communities, and interactive spaces to stay active
  • Intelligent Nutrition: Digital solutions to promote healthy eating adapted to the elderly
  • Social Inclusion and Senior Talent: Platforms for connecting and promoting senior talent, memory spaces, and intergenerational programs
  • Active Tourism +65: Adaptation of trips and experiences in Andorra to be accessible and enriching for older people, promoting the silver economy

Territorial and Demographic Context

Andorra’s aging population presents challenges and opportunities similar to those faced by other European countries. The percentage of residents over 65 is over 15% and projected to increase significantly in the coming decades. This, coupled with a high life expectancy, creates unique demands in healthcare, well-being, and social inclusion.

Specifics of Aging in Andorra

  • Geographic Access to Services: Andorra’s mountainous terrain makes it difficult for elderly residents in outlying areas to access social and healthcare services readily available in the central parishes
  • Adapted Infrastructure and Housing: There’s a need to develop smart homes and accessible environments to ensure the safety and autonomy of the senior population
  • Social Inclusion and Unwanted Loneliness: Many senior citizens live alone or with limited social networks, negatively impacting their physical and mental health. Their experience and talent represent a valuable resource for society
  • Prevention and Well-being: It is essential to promote healthy habits, such as physical and mental activity, a balanced diet, and personalized monitoring
  • Senior-focused Culture and Tourism: While Andorra is an attractive destination for tourists over 65, services and experiences need to be tailored to meet their specific needs
